Original color of the flying helmet is still visible under the earflap.

According to the previous owner user of these helmets was Private First Class Quido "Turk" Novotny who was from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He served during WW1 with 61st Service Squadron which was located at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York. Right helmet is a German Air Service leather helmet which was most propably used also by Novotny during winters or it was just a war-booty helmet of the Great War.
Another standard WW1 issue summer weight flying helmet from my collection in original color. The chinstrap assembly is different and the press stud adjusters are on rear of the earflap.
