Noctiludent Clouds (NLC)
14.8.2001

Noctiludent Clouds (NLC) are a strange phenomena in the Mesosphere (appr. 75-90 km above ground level). It is possible to see NLCs, when the Sun is from 4 to 16 degrees below horizon. Southern Finland is very suitable area for observating NLCs. Here in Finland NLCs are most common in July and in the beginning of August.

Observations in 2001 in Hyvinkää, Finland (60N38 24E50):

August 2001:  (1 observation)

  • 11./12.8.2001 klo 20.20-22.00 ... UT (Hyvinkää / Mäntsälä / Askola):
    NLC's 11.8.2001 at 2055 UT in Hyvinkää
I got an NLC-alarm at 20.20 UT. At that time NLC's were up to 20 degrees in the north. Around 21.00 UT NLC's were less than 5 degrees from the horizon. This was not very spectacular display. No real observations about the end of display, as I observed Perseids and around 23.30 UT clouds covered the sky.

July 2001:  (7 observations)

  • 31.7./1.8.2001 21.55-0.25 UT (Hyvinkää, Kytäjä > Janakkala, Kiipula):
NLCs, Jupiter and Venus 31.7.2001 at 2348 UT in Janakkala

NLCs and Venus 31.7.2001 at 2329 UT in Janakkala
Bright NLC bands and small wave groups near the horizon (only 5 degrees above horizon) in the 40 degree sector. After 23 UT Venus and Jupiter completed this display! Due to clouds I had to drive to Janakkala, some 35 km north of Hyvinkää.

  • 27./28.7.2001 20.30-0.20... UT (Renko 60N54 24E17):
NLCs 27.7.2001 at 2324 UTC in Renko - The Right side of the display
TOP 1 -display in my NLC-career!
Very bright and beautiful display with bands, waves etc.! At first NLC up to 40 degrees, during the darkest night to 20 degrees (in 120 degree sector) and after 0 UTC up to 110 degrees (to Deneb) covering more than half of the sky. (I had to go to sleep at 0320 UTC, but the display lasted in Kustavi until 0122 UTC!)

  • 25./26.7.2001 21.50-23.50 UT:
NLCs 25.7.2001 at 2302 UTC in Hyvinkää
Bright and beautiful display with bands and waves up to 30-40 degrees.
(NLCs also on 26./27.7. but I had a rainy weather with thunder and lightnings).

  • 20./21.7.2001 21.30-22.00 UT (Äänekoski 62N40 25E45):
At least waves in the South-West (two small groups) and a quite long band in the North-West. NLC probably also in the Southern Sky and in the Zenith, but high clouds (Cirrus) were a problem.

  • 7./8.7.2001 22.00-22.45 UT:
NLC waves 5 degrees from Arcturus on the right side i.e. in the North-West. Waves also in the North-East, but not so high on the sky. Some NLC also in the North.

  • 5./6.7.2001 21.15-22.45 ... UT:
NLC came as early as 2115 UTC suggesting a good display. However, this display was a disappoinment as it faded before the darkest moment of the night. At the beginning NLC in the zenith and in the east, 2130 UTC in the south-west (from the left side of the Moon to Arcturus). 2215- bands in the north.

  • 4./5.7.2001 21.50-22.50... UT:
From 21.50 NLC in the north. Later NLC covered half of the sky from Arcturus to Vega, over the zenith and 20 degrees east from Capella. Mainly waves (IIb), but in the west also bands (IIIb) 10-20 degrees above the horizon. Quite bright NLC this time (3-4).

June 2001:  (1 observation)

  • 28/29.6.2001  21.35-22.45 UT:
At the beginning NLC near the zenith, but not very bright. After 22 UTC quite bright NLC especially in the zenith and from the zenith to south in Summer Triangle ((Deneb - Vega - Altair) area (big S-shaoe NLC 170 degrees from the north horizon).

Observations in 2000 in Hyvinkää, Finland (60N38 24E50):

August 2000:  (1 observation)

  • 10./11.8.2000  21.50-00.50 UT:
    aur28325.jpg (12281 bytes)

    aur28433.jpg (11450 bytes)

At first NLCs were low on the northern sky. In the end they reached already Big Dipper (up tpo 30 degrees above horizon). From 2235 UTC also Northern Lights! This was a good compination of NLCs and Northern Lights together (first time for me)! Also some Perseid meteros observed!

July 2000:  (No observations)

  • July nights were mainly cloudy.

June 2000:  (No observations)

Observations in 1999 in Hyvinkää, Finland (60N38 24E50):

NLCs in Hyvinkää, Finland 28/29th July 1999 at 2330 UT
Really bright display up to 20 degrees in North with "wings on both North-East and North-West. The most beautiful display I have seen!

  • 26./27.7.1999 ...21.30-22.00... UT:
Some faint waves in North-East only 5 degrees above horizon.
  • 23./24.7.1999 22.00-23.20 UT (Lahti and Nastola):
NLCs in Nastola 23rd July 1999 after 23 UT
Very bright display disturbed with normal clouds. I have to drive some 10-15 km to east to find better place! Brighter than any display in 1998!
  • Earlier in July no observations. Usually the evenings were cloudy and I was a little bit lazy and tired!

Observations in 1998 in Hyvinkää, Finland (60N38 24E50):

  • 19./20.7.1998  21.35-23.25 UT:
Bright NLC from 340 to 010 degrees, less bright, but still well visible NLC from 010 to 050 degrees. 15 degrees above horizon. Forms: at least I, IIb, brightness: 2-4.
  • 16./17.7.1998  21.20-23.20 UT:
At first bands in NW about 30-40 degrees above horizon. After 22 UT bands in 30 degree sector only about 10 degrees above horizon. Clouds disturbed from horizon to 5-10 degrees above horizon.

  • 28./29.6.1998  22.05-22.15 UT:
Some NLCs for a short moment only.
  • 27./28.6.1998  22.30-23.25 UT:
NLCs in 70 degree sector, but not in bright forms.
