Arms Deal - The Selling of the F-16
Ingemar Dörfer: Arms Deal - The Selling of the F-16
There was never any question about it. The F-16 was a pilot's airplane, a vehicle for those with the right stuff.
Arms Deal is the inside story of the sale of the F-16, the airplane of the future, the arms deal of the century. It is the story of how General Dynamics sold 348 air combat fighters to Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands in 1975 and overcame the rough international competition of Northrop, Dassault and Saab.
But Arms Deal is more than just a story of one enormous weapons sale. It also provides a revealing - and often shocking - look at the complex, tightly knit group of men, largely unknown to the public, who control the development, sale, and purchase of sophisticated and advanced weapons systems. It is meticulously researched, always fascinating account of high politics in seven capitals
and four major corporations, of Byzantine intrigues in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. The story is a set of Chinese boxes, told over and over again, the perspective shifting from one capital to another. The book is based on four years of investigative reporting in the nations involved, extensive documentation (including heretofore unpublished documents), and more than 300 in-depth interviews with key decision makers, politicians, diplomats, military officers, and industrialists. Arms Deal is essential reading for students, scholars, and professionals in the field of politics, international relations, science policy, diplomacy, business, and military studies.
Ingemar Dörfer was a senior research associate during the writing of this book, National Swedish Defense Research Institute, and a member of the deparment of government at Uppsala University. He has written numerous works on defense policy, the international arms trade, and technology.
