Finland

Facts About the Finnish Defence Forces A general website for the Finnish armed forces. There used to be an English version but this seems to have disappeared in the 2000 version; maybe it will come back. Even the Finnish version contains almost nothing of historical interest.
Finland in WWII A superb site, with detailed information and first class graphics.; highly recommended. It only covers Talvisota - the Winter War - in detail but it is to be hoped that the author will add a similar section on the Jatkusota - Continuation War. The list of references is very good indeed. The section on Radio Intelligence is probably unique.
Central Finland Aviation Museum

A nice site (a bit spoiled by irritating wallpaper) in English. Good pictures and technical data of aircraft that have served with the Finnish Airforce, including several rarities. There is a brief, but informative, page on the use of the swastika as a Finnish symbol. The museum itself is well worth a visit and full directions are given.

Air raids on Helsinki in Feb. 1944

http://personal.inet.fi/koti/pauli.kruhse/lauttasaari/airraid.htm

A good timeline, with a few pictures.

Helsinki City Art Museum

There seems no good reason why this site should exist where it does and it simply shows a rather good photograph of a 76- itk-31-type AAA gun which operated on Myllykallio hill in Lauttasaari, in 1944, and is now preserved there as a monument.

Finnish Air Force

Covers the whole history of the FAF. Good graphics and a list of reference books.

Battles of the Winter War

A very comprehensive site with good maps. Unfortunately the site is a bit chaotic. However, the information is there.

Puolustusvoimat in theWWII

Covers the Finnish Army in the whole of WWII. The timeline probably cannot be bettered and the site is packed with technical and statistical data. Readability is sometimes marred by a peculiar blue stripe down the left side of some pages.

History of Finland

Unbelievably ugly site but if you are looking for documents, this is the place to start. Admire the rhetoric in the propaganda leaflets dropped by the Soviets: Down with the bloody henchmen of the people, the renegade gang of Mannerheim, Tanner, Ryti!

Military Pictures and Links

Lots of pictures from the Parola Armour Museum but of varying quality. A few pictures of fixed fortifications.

Finnish Armour 1939-45

An unofficial page for the Parola Armour Museum but mostly using official photographs. Very high quality and worth a visit.

PANSSARIKILTA

Official site of Finnish Armour guild and Armour museum. In Finnish and apparently under construction.

The IPMS Fi-1877 Page

Dedicated to the Finnish Armed Forces in WWII. Very good pictures of armour and infantry equipment, well laid out.

Fighter History

Very comprehensive site with pictures of fighter aircraft and papers on tactics during the Winter and Continuation Wars.

Mannerheim

Beautifully produced site, in several languages. Some of the other Finnish sites should take lessons from here. The title tells you all you need to know.

Finnish Defence Forces in WWII

Almost none of the topics listed have actually been implemented: if they were, this would be an outstanding site. The section on Finnish Military Decorations is interesting.

German Forces in Finland in WWII

Utterly useless: none of the links work.

Finnisches Frei-willigen Bataillon der Waffen-SS

Very good, with superb pictures. Perhaps a little biased for my taste - but then, I'm biased.

Finnish Navy in WWII

One of the few sites covering Finnish naval forces. Well illustrated with pictures from the author's grandfather's collection. Covers an enormous amount of ground, often leaving the reader hungry for more detail.

BENGTSKÄR

The "official" guide, published by the University of Turku. Not as good as the version given here, but a very good aerial photo of the island.

A Web History of Finland

An enormous site: the author clearly hasn't yet grasped the concept of splitting a document into pages. If you can wait long enough for it to load there might be something interesting in the WWII section.

The Finnish Mosin Nagant

Seems to be only for owners of Mosin Nagant rifles - or perhaps I'm missing something?

Gunwriter's Suomi History

All you ever wanted to know - and more - about the famous Finnish sub-machine gun.

Finland's WWII Medals

Comprehensive and informative but a pity the pictures aren't in better focus.

Recipients of the Mannerheim Cross

In Finnish. Mostly a list of names and dates.

Orders, Medals, and Decorations of Finland

What it says.

Hango Front-line Museum

In Finnish. An official guide to one of the very few front-line fortifications that has been preserved intact - in this case, facing the occupying Soviet troops in the Hanko peninsula. Relative to the material that is available in this fascinating museum (which is mostly closed), the site is disappointing

Finland in the World War II

Made by pupils of a secondary school in Jyväskylä, Finland, the english version of these pages is under construction. This looks as if it will be very good when it is finished and has lots of good, high-quality contemporary photos - probably from Army archives. One of the few siteswith a section devoted to the "LOTTA SVÄRD", the Finnish women's auxiliaries who played a vital part in WWII. Some pages are rather slow to load and you'll have to guess what the Finnish means, but definitely worth a visit.

The War in Karelia

In Finnish. Almost entirely text. A great pity that there is no English version because the content is excellent. Some maps would help.

Airman's Story

In Finnish. Short, but with audio.

Blenheim Pilot's Story

Another web author who hasn't heard of pages: very slow to load but worth it. Personal story of 1st Lieutenant Kauko Aho, with many illustrations. Definitely worth a visit.

Those Burly Finns

Very strange.

Swedish Volunteers in Finland, 1939-44

In Swedish. A few pictures.

F 19

The Swedish volunteer aviation unit in Finland during the Winter War. Brief history with additional links.

The White Death

The battle for Suomussalmi, 7 Dec 1939 to 8 Jan 1940. Good-ish, if a bit romanticised, factual account.

Winter war in Suomussalmi

Very good accounts of the battles of Suomussalmi and the Raate Road, with a few pictures.

Soviet air raids on Helsinki in February 1944

Brief history and comprehensive bibliography.

Baltic States

The Baltics Worldwide Not actually a WWII site but a news magazine which regularly features very well-written articles about the Baltic States during WWII. Definitely worth checking out occasionally.

Estonia

Latvia

Lithuania

Lithuanian Aviation Museum

A potentially interesting site, almost entirely "under construction". Slightly spoiled by some indifferent graphics and icons. No doubt it will improve as they get more money and experience. An English version of some pages is available but the Union Flag icon is very difficult to spot because of its peculiar colours: usually, it is below the picture in the top left corner.
