02.08 Azerbaijan 120208-04 Baku, Sabunchu and Khatai districts. Azerigas. A tanker truck carrying LPG overturned in Baku around 13:00, not far from the refinery, exploded, and caught fire. The incident apparently occurred near a gas pipeline. Kamandar Eyvazli, a spokesman for Azerigas, said: “The main reason a problem occurred in gas supply in Baku is the crash of a truck carrying propane gas in Nizami district several hours ago, and the occurrence of fire as a result of it.” According to him, the gas flow in the pipeline was suspended to prevent a second major incident. Eyvazli said that this pipeline supplied part of Nizami, Sabunchu and Khatai districts with gas and noted that work was being conducted at the site for elimination of the results of the blast, adding: “The gas supply will be restored as soon as the this work finishes.” He said that the gas supply would be restored in 1-2 hours. The Azerigas official said that no serous problem on gas supply was recorded in the other places of the capital.

02.07 USA 120207-06 TX, Port Arthur. Motiva Enterprises. A brief power outage affected a gasoline-producing fluid catalytic cracker and other units at Motiva’s 285,000 bpd Port Arthur refinery. Kayla Macke, a company spokeswoman, confirmed a malfunction had occurred at the refinery, writing in a statement: "The Motiva Port Arthur Refinery is experiencing an operational situation that requires flaring at this time. There are no injuries, nor is there any impact to the community. The appropriate agencies have been notified."
Trade sources said the refinery was working to stabilize the refinery's power supply and restore normal operations One of the sources said: "It was a blip. They're getting everything back to normal." |

02.06 Kazakstan 120206-06 Shymkent. KazMunaiGas. A major fire broke out at the KazMunaiGas refinery in Shymkent. According to witnesses, the fire broke out at about 14:30, and smoke rose 30 metres high. According to one source: "The fire took place in the rectifying column. [Distillation column. Possibly a CDU. Ed.] At preset, the fire has been extinguished. The first fire engines left the scene." At present, the cause of the fire and damage were being clarified. No dead or injured were reported yet.
Oil refinery technical director Sergei Pilipenko later said that a pipe broken as a result of freezing may have caused the fire in a furnace in an oil refinery. Pilipenko said: "There was a fire in additional furnace for oil refining. It was extinguished by the staff within five minutes. Then firemen eliminated the fire. Leak apparently occurred due to cold weather, a pipe was broken, according to the preliminary supposition. No casualties and injured are reported, it has not affected operation of the plant, as it is not the main production." |
