The 2nd International "Antti Rissanen" Jazz Trombone Competition in the City of Kotka 6-7 August 2008   news release 8.8.2008

Kristian Persson (SWE) won the 2nd Antti Rissanen Jazztrombone Competition held in Kotka 6.-7. August. He received a brand new model of Miraphone Jazz Trombone and 1500€ for the first prize.

Kasperi Sarikoski (FIN) was the second and James Hall (USA) was elected the third.
Kasperi Sarikoski was elected the favourite player of the audience. He also got a special award for his interpretation of the original compulsory song of the final "In the Spotlight", composed by Antti Rissanen.

The Competition had two rounds, semi-final and final. There were all together 8 trombone players competiting towards victory: Kristian Persson, Kasperi Sarikoski, James Hall, Jussi Kosonen, Hannu Lamminmäki, Sasu Schildt, Janne Vihavainen and Johannes Klemettinen.

The level of the competitors this year was really high, and it was a difficult job for the jury to decide the order of the top three players. That is why the jury devided to share the money awards equally with all three top players, everyone getting 1500€.  The jury consisted of Petri Juutilainen, Pekka Leander, Risto Pellava and Antti Rissanen as a chairman.

This was the 2nd time of this competition.The last one was held in 2005 and the winner of that competition was Andy Hunter (USA). The next competition will be held in 2011.

The competition was organized by the Kotka Jazz Society and the Finnish Trombone and Tuba Association (SuPaTuS) in association with the Kotka Music Institute and the City of Kotka. 

 

Rules of the 2nd International "Antti Rissanen" Jazz Trombone Competition, Kotka 2008
 

1. The Antti Rissanen Jazz Trombone Competition is being arranged by the Kotka Jazz Association and the City of Kotka. The competition will be held on 6-7 August 2008 at the Cultural House “Laulumiesten talo”.

2. The competition is open to slide trombonists of all nationalities born in 1978 or later.

3. The competition is held every third year.

4. A written application must be sent to the competition secretary by 31 May 2008. The arrival date will be determined by the post stamp. Late entries can be accepted only by a decision of the jury.

5. The signed application must include the following:
- Your contact information (name, address, telephone number, e-mail address)
- A copy of your passport or some other official identification
- CV (Curriculum Vitae)
- Two photos
- A C cassette, minidisc or CD recording (studio level not required) of Stella by Starlight
(Victor Young) and one piece of your own choosing.

The maximum length of the recording is 12 minutes. The recording must include the following: names of pieces and musicians, and time and place of recording. The tunes can be performed as a solo or with the accompaniment of a play-along or live rhythm section.

6. The maximum number of competitors is 12. In case of more than 12 entrants, the jury will decide qualification based on registrations and recordings received. Entrants will receive written note of their qualification by 15 June 2008.

7. Travel and accommodation costs are to be paid by the competitors. The competition location has a meal facility and food will be provided to all participants by the organizer. 8. Performance order will be decided by allotment on 6 August 2008 at 10.00 in the Cultural House “Laulumiesten Talo”. All competitors must be personally present or represented by another person with a proxy. Performance order will remain the same through the whole competition.

9. The competition will be in three parts: the first round from recordings (max. 12 chosen), and preliminary and final rounds, which will both be public. Competitors will be accompanied by a piano trio (piano, bass and drums). Before each part of the competition, competitors will have a chance to practice with the trio for 45 minutes. The practice order will be the same as the competition order. Competitors can also be accompanied by their own musicians, in which case costs are to be paid by the competitor.

10. Preliminary (6 August)
The compulsory tune to be played in the preliminary competition is Stella by Starlight (Victor Young). The other two tunes (of which one should be a ballad) can be selected by the competitor. The maximum length of the performance will be 15 minutes.

11. Final (7 August)
Max. of 6 competitors will make it to the final. A compulsory tune to be played in the final is a new piece composed by Antti Rissanen. Other tunes will be selected by competitor. The maximum length of the final performance will be 20 minutes. The music chart of the new compulsory piece will be sent by 15 June 2008 together with qualification approval to all participants.

12. The Kotka Jazz Association will form the jury, which will be led by Antti Rissanen.

13. Prizes
1st prize will be 2000€ and a Miraphone Jazz Trombone, 2nd prize 1500€ and 3rd prize 1000€. The jury withholds the right to change the amount and number of prizes. Winners will be published and prizes given immediately after the final is over on the 7th of August.

14. The winner cannot participate in the next competition that will be held in three years time.

15. The competition organisation has an unlimited right to broadcast, record, video record, televise (not for commercial use), photograph or film competition performances without any compensation.

Kotkan 2. kansainvälinen ”Antti Rissanen” –jazzpasuunakilpailu

Tapahtuman kuvaus

Kotka jazz r.y. ja Kotkan kaupunki yhteistyössä Suomen pasuuna- ja tuubaseuran ja Kotkan musiikki-opiston kanssa järjestävät 2. kansainvälisen Antti Rissanen –pasuunakilpailun Kotkassa 6.-7.8. 2008. Kilpailun tarkoituksena on nostaa esille nuoria taitavia jazz-pasuunan soittajia ja tuoda heille julkisuutta sekä edistää ylipäänsä pasuunan käyttämistä sooloinstrumenttina.

Maailmassa on vain kaksi jazzpasuunakilpailua entuudestaan. Ne ovat molemmat USA:ssa majaansa pitävän Kansainvälisen pasuunayhdistyksen, International Trombone Associationin kansainvälisiä kilpailuja, joista toisen Antti Rissanenkin voitti vuonna 1998. Eurooppalaisia voittajia kyseisissä kilpailuissa on vuosien varrelle kertynyt vain neljä. Siksi on suuri tarve saada vastaava kilpailu myös Eurooppaan ja on kunnia järjestää kilpailu nimenomaan pohjoismaissa ja Suomessa. Ensimmäinen pasuunakilpailu järjestettiin vuonna 2005 ja jatkossa kilpailu tullaan järjestämään edelleen joka kolmas vuosi.

Kilpailun pitopaikka, Kotkan kaupunki, tunnetaan perinteikkäänä jazz-kaupunkina, josta on tullut vuosien saatossa useita eturivin jazzmuusikoitamme. Jotkut heistä ovat myös luoneet kansainvälisen muusikonuran. Yksi heistä on tämän kilpailun nimeä kantava, kotkalaislähtöinen pasunisti Antti Rissanen.

 Kilpailun säännöt

1.      Antti Rissanen -pasuunakilpailun järjestää Kotka Jazz r.y. ja Kotkan kaupunki. Kilpailu pidetään Kotkassa 6.-7.8.2008. Tapahtumapaikkana on Kotkan Laulumiestalo, jonka osoite on Korkeavuorenkatu 11, 48100 Kotka.

2.   Kilpailuun voivat osallistua kaikki vetopasunistit, jotka ovat syntyneet vuonna 1978 tai sen jälkeen.

3.   Kilpailut pidetään joka kolmas vuosi. 

4.   Kilpailuun osallistutaan lähettämällä postitse hakemus 31.5. 2008 mennessä kilpailusihteeri Kaisa Rissaselle osoitteella: Kaisa Rissanen, Gutzeitintie 21 B 22, 48100 Kotka. Postileiman päivämäärä (31.5.) riittää. Myöhästyneet osallistumiset voidaan hyväksyä vain tuomariston erillisellä päätöksellä.

5.   Allekirjoitetun hakemuksen tulee sisältää:
- omat yhteystiedot (nimi, osoite, puhelinnumero, sähköposti)
- Valokopio passista tai muusta virallisesta henkilökortista (esim. ajokortti)
- CV (ansioluettelo)
- Kaksi valokuvaa
- C-kasetti, minidisc tai CD-levy (jonka ei tarvitse olla studiotasoinen), jolla oma tulkinta kappaleesta Stella By Starlight (Victor Young) sekä yksi vapaavalintainen kappale

Nauhoituksen maksimipituus on 12 minuuttia ja sen tulee sisältää seuraavat tiedot:
- vapaavalintaisen kappaleen nimi
- muusikot, jotka nauhoituksessa soittavat
- nauhoituksen aika ja paikka

Kappaleiden tulee olla esitetty vaihtoehtoisesti joko yksin tai rytmisektion tai taustanauhan kanssa.

6.   Kilpailuun valitaan nauhoitusten perusteella maksimissaan 12 pasunistia. Valituille lähetetään kirjallinen osallistumiskutsu 15. kesäkuuta 2008 mennessä.

7.   Matka- ja majoituskulut maksaa kilpailija. Kilpailupaikassa on ruokailumahdollisuus. Mikäli tarvitset apua majoituksen järjestämisessä, ota yhteyttä kilpailusihteeri Kaisa Rissaseen. (ks. yhteystiedot lopusta)

8.   Kilpailujärjestys arvotaan 6. elokuuta 2008 klo 10.00 Kotkan Laulumiestalon pääsalissa. Kaikkien osallistujien tulee olla läsnä henkilökohtaisesti tai asettaa valtuutettu edustaja. Kilpailujärjestys on sama läpi koko kilpailun.

9.   Kilpailu käydään kolmessa osassa, alkukarsinta, välierä ja finaali. Alkukarsinta tehdään kilpailuun lähetettyjen äänitteiden avulla. Välierä  ja finaali ovat molemmat ovat julkisia. Osallistujia säestää pianotrio (piano, basso ja rummut). Ennen kilpailun jokaista osaa kilpailijoilla on mahdollisuus harjoitella trion kanssa 45 minuuttia. Harjoittelujärjestys on sama kuin kilpailujärjestys. Osallistujat voivat käyttää myös itse valitsemaansa rytmisektiota, mutta siinä tapauksessa osallistuja maksaa kulut itse.

10. Välierä (6.8.)
Välierässä soitettava pakollinen kappale on Stella by Starlight (Victor Young). Kaksi muuta kappaletta (joista toisen tulee olla balladi) osallistuja voi valita itse. Esityksen maksimipituus on 15 minuuttia.

11. Finaali (7.8.)
Maksimissaan 6 osallistujaa valitaan finaaliin. Esityksen maksimipituus on 15 minuuttia.
Pakollinen kappale finaalissa on Rissasen uusi kilpailuun säveltämä teos, joka lähetetään kilpailuun valituille hyväksymiskirjeen mukana 15.kesäkuuta mennessä. Muut 1-2 kappaletta ovat vapaavalintaisia.

12.  Kotka jazz r.y. asettaa tuomariston Antti Rissasen johdolla.

13. Palkinnot: 1. palkinto 2000 € ja Miraphone jazzpasuuna, 2. palkinto 1500 € ja 3. palkinto1000 €. Tuomaristo pidättää itsellään oikeuden muuttaa palkintojen rahasummia. Palkinnot jaetaan heti loppukilpailun jälkeen.

14. Voittaja ei voi osallistua seuraaviin Antti Rissanen -jazzpasuunakilpailuihin.

15. Kilpailuorganisaatiolla on kaikki oikeudet julkaista, nauhoittaa, valokuvata, videoida, televisioida (ei kaupalliseen käyttöön) osallistujien kilpailuesityksiä ilman erillistä palkkiota.

16. Nämä säännöt on laadittu alkuperäisesti Suomen kielellä. Kaikki mahdolliset
epäselvyydet ratkaistaan suomenkielisiin sääntöihin nojaten.
