Feather Pattern

You will need the following tools to complete this tutorial:

  1. Open a new image (File > New): 400 x 400 pixels, 72 ppi, white, 16.7 million colours.
  2. Set your foreground style to gradient and pick a gradient (mine is Chrome Reflect) using these settings:

    Invert gradient unchecked, Horizontal 50, Vertical 50, Repeats 0, Style Sunburst

  3. Flood fill your image with the gradient.

  4. Apply Effects > Edge > Enhance three times. You should get a funky pattern in the image.

  5. Apply Effects > Artistic Effects > Topography using the default settings (click the Reset button).

  6. Apply Effects > Texture Effects > Rough Leather using the Custom 3 preset:

    Leather colour #000000, Angle 323, Luminance 0, Contrast 6, Sharpness 33, Blur 15, Light colour #828282 Image after Rough Leather

  7. Apply Effects > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope using the default settings (click the Reset button), except change the number of petals to 6. Everything else should be at zero.

  8. Apply Effects > Plugin Filters > Simple > Half Wrap.

  9. Apply Effects > Plugin Filters > Simple > Blintz.

  10. Resize your image (Image > Resize) using the following settings and you're done! Save either as a .png (better image quality) or as a .jpg (smaller file size).

    Percentage of original: Width 25 x Height 25; Resize type: Bilinear resample

    Click on the images to see them tiled.

Note: Your pattern will probably be too busy to use for a Web page background as such - you may want to mute it, or you can use it as it is if you enclose your text in a table that has a background colour you've chosen from the pattern.
