Bright Noise Glitter Tutorial

Finished Image

You will need the following tools to complete this tutorial:

  1. Open a new image (File > New): 600 x 300 pixels, 72 ppi, transparent, 16.7 million colours.
  2. Set your background style to a light colour and your foreground style to a darker shade of the same colour (I used #E6DEED and #A284BC).
  3. Select the Text tool and set the stroke width to 1 in the Tool Options Palette.
  4. Apply floating text using a relatively thin font (mine is Edwardian Script ITC) - make it antialiased and about as big as mine at the top of this page.
  5. Go to Selections > Modify > Contract: 1.
  6. While still selected, go to Layers > Duplicate twice; you should now have three identical layers.
  7. While still selected, apply Effects > Plug-in Filters > dsb flux > Bright Noise: set the intensity to 50 and click the Mix button once.
  8. While still selected, activate your middle layer and apply the same filter, but click the Mix button twice to randomize the noise.
  9. While still selected, activate your bottom layer and apply the same filter, but click the Mix button three times.
  10. Deselect.
  11. Double click the Crop tool and choose "Select opaque area - merged". Go to Image > Crop.
  12. Save as a PSP file. [PSP 8/9: save as an Animation Shop file.]
  13. Launch Animation Shop and open the image you just saved (File > Open) - the three layers should be automatically converted into three animation frames.
  14. Your animation is ready! To preview it, go to View > Animation. Save as a GIF file.

Tips: Besides solid colours, try using gradients or patterns. Add a drop shadow to each layer after step 10 if you like. You can also glitter an image or a tube: select the part you want to glitter and proceed from step 6 above.
