The Viljakainen (Wiljakain) Family is one of the oldest families in Savo.
The Family has lived in Savo since the Middle Ages.
In the mid-16th century, in Savo, taxes were levied on over 20 Viljakainens.
In the very early 16th century,
Olli Viljakainen lived in Kerisalo in Joroinen,
where he cleared land in order to farm.
His son and grandsons lost this farm at the end of the 16th century,
because of the prisons maintained in Joroinen by armed forces.
On the island of Viljakkala in Puulavesi, Viljakainens also cleared land.
They have lived there since the Middle Ages and some are living there still.
Viljakainens also owned land in Kangasniemi and in Hirvensalmi.
The Pihlajataipale farm in Kaitainen in Joroinen
has been in the family for over 300 years.
The other part of this farm, the Siili farm, is in Virtasalmi.
The family now comprises thousands of people scattered
all over the world.
To date,
information has been gathered on about two thousand of them.
It is our hope that
relatives will help us gather even more
information in order to preserve our
family history
for ourselves and for future generations.
If you would like to
help, please fill in
the Family Information form and send it to the
researcher.
He will publish a book about the family, both in paper and
CD-format.
Photos, videos and records are also welcome.
