Sulttaani aka Sultan was Elina's first dog. He came to a retirement home from Muura's kennel. He had made a career as show dog and stud. Elina started to trick train him, and tried a bit of agility. But shows were always the big thing for Sulttaani - he loved to perform, be the center of attention, and meet other dogs. Elina showed him in veteran class. Sulttaani got several BOB veteran placings in 1997 and 1998, also at the World Dog Show in Helsinki 1998. He was the veteran phalène of the year in 1997.
Apart from shows, Sulttaani loved bitches of all breeds. He was a great charmer and gentleman dog. He had a lot of temperament and natural authority. Sulttaani was always the unchallenged boss of the local papillon & phalène club (Cityperhoset) gatherings. His best friends included a mixie cat named Vili, Kalevi's huge japanese spitz named Panda, labrador and dachshund bitches in the neighborhood, dogs owned by Elina's pals, and his previous pack at Muura's kennel.
On a dark evening in November 1998 Elina and Lily, who was back then about 6 months old, found Sulttaani lying dead on the floor. He had been diagnosed with slight heart murmur, but otherwise in a pretty good condition. The vet suggested he probably died of a heart attack. Elina didn't want an autopsy, and Sulttaani was buried under a spruce tree.
Sulttaani taught Elina a lot about both dogs and life. Eventually she achieved a full understanding and trust with him, a wordless connection. Sulttaani was a real "once-in-a-life" dog. Memory of him and the sorrow for the loss have faded, but will never be completely forgotten.
