bio
in the beginning/from thrash-metal to crossover
ari and tuomo started to play together in spring 1992. first two months they played together until in august 1992 helge joined to play guitar and soon after that. in september 1992, samu joined to play 2nd guitar. the style was more or less thrash oriented metal, main influences were acid reign and sacred reich, both musically and lyrically. the very first, nameless demotape was recorded in october 1992.
in the beginning of 1993 they continued as a three-piece = helge/tuomo/ari. also the style started to move towards hardcore|metal crossover thrash. songs became shorter and faster. in november 1993 they recorded 2nd demotape, named "xylitol friend", the first recording at the real studio. only four months later they recorded next demo, named "back", the 3rd one. it included some songs from the 2nd demo, but few new ones as well.
from crossover to grindcore
during the year 1994 the style became more and more grindcore oriented. tuomo changed his vocal style from raspy shouting to deeper growling. but the style wasn't just a grindcore, finnish xysma became very important influental role. band started to mix together rockin' riffs and fast blast-beats, like xysma did. also dead kennedys was an important influence, especially tuomo started to study dk style riffing.
in the summer 1994 they changed the name from cause and effect to cause for effect, since there was some other band with the same name.
in february 1995 they recorded a new demotape. rehearsed more, recorded a new one with the same songs in april 1995, but the result was a disappoitment. so in the june 1995 they recorded the same songs (a couple new) in 3rd time. now the result was good and the demo got a name "fast angry and nimble".
the underground scene, record deal
during the year 1994 tuomo started to send "back" demo for underground magazines and the band became aware of the ug scene. the first record deal was with finnish merwi records and two other finnish labels. together they released cause for effect/noise waste split 7" ep in 1995. cause for effect side was from the "back" demo. the pressing was 500 copies. band's first official release.
they tried to get a new record deal with "fast, angry and nimble" demo but didn't succeed. until in 1996 japanese hg fact label released a massive international hardcore/grindcore compilation cd "no fate" and it included one track of the band taken from the "fast..." demo. the track was "not gloomy".
line up change, new releases
in autumn 1996 helge left the band because the style started to be too grindy and technical for his taste. tuomo's brother jamu came to help as a session guitarist. he helped the years 1996-1999.
band rehearsed together new, faster and more technical songs until february 1997 they went to the studio to record 5 new tracks for the compilation 10" lp and re-recorded the "fast, angry and nimble" -demotape. finnish tylyt levyt released 10" compilation lp in 1997. also spanish upground records released re-recorded "fast..." -demo under the name "nuclear blues" in the same year 1997. it was a tape release.
just after three months since last studio visit, the band went to studio again in may 1997 to record 11 songs, 5 of the were re-recorded versions of the compilation 10" lp and 6 were new. this was the first time at the fantom studio with janne jokinen who later recorded more cause for effect releases. this sessions was probably the most ease so far. it took only 11 hours to record, mix and master all 11 songs. the result was very good and the material ended to cause for effect/utter bastard split 3" mcd which released in january 1998 by tylyt levyt.
own rehearsal place, fast material
in october 1997 the band finally got own rehearsal place in tampere. the whole previous year ari and tuomo had traveled every weekend to their previous hometown to rehearse jamu's own band's rehearsal room. ari and tuomo started to compose new material and asked janne, the studio guy to play the guitar since jamu lived in a different town. janne was a part of the band about two months, but it became clear that he didn't have a time because of his own band and the studio. so jamu came to help again, but only when ari and tuomo needed guitarist for the gigs.
ari and tuomo composed new material since october 1997 and finally in september 1998 they went to janne's studio to record first full length album. tuomo played both guitar and bass tracks. 32 songs, some of the were re-recorded versions from the split 3" mcd w/ utter bastard but most of the tracks were new. the album was half an hour long and since it was very fast and straightforward, ari and tuomo decided to name it "fast material".
first european tour
october 1998 ari and tuomo, with the help of jamu went to first european tour together with finnish band incriminated and german band amnion. it took about two weeks around the germany, mostly at the squats but also some rock clubs. it was the first experience with free beer so the result was quite wild. they played 12 gigs and returned to finland in november 1998.
release troubles, bass|drums|duo, vinyl split
tylyt levyt had a plan to release "fast material" in the beginning of 1999 but because of financial problems, the project cancelled. so the band had to find another label and in spring 1999 ecocentric records from germany answered yes. but it wasn't that easy, it took over a year until finally in the year 2000 "fast material" came out, but it was already old material because of ari and tuomo had started to compose new material without the guitar.
actually ari and tuomo had composed "fast material" already together, without the guitar. and the whole year 1998 they rehearsed without the guitar, only when they needed a help for the tour, jamu traveled to rehearse together. but in the beginning of the 1999 jamu decided to quit, since he had moved to other town to study and he had his own band. he didn't have a time. at first ari and tuomo tried to seek a guitarist and tested one guy, but quite soon tuomo started to think the possibility to continue without the guitar. the idea came from the american hardcore/power violence bands who used bass as a main instrument.
in summer 1999 ari and tuomo discussed the situation and in the august 1999 they officially decided to continue without the guitar.
in the beginning 1999 machismo prod. from australia wanted to release a split 7" ep with czech band onanizer. the material for that release was taken from "fast material".
new cause for effect, pq-2
ari and tuomo had already new material, which they have started to compose in october 1998, right after the "fast material" recording session. it was more complex than very straightforward style in "fast material" which they felt it was totally done in that record. new songs were like the style has been since.
in november 1999 ari and tuomo entered again to fantom studio and recorded 20 songs within a weekend. janne recorded and mixed and mastered also in this time. the result was pq-2, the first duo recording.
the beginning of the year 2000 they tried to find a label who would release pq-2 and finally they founded swedish ubble-gubble records who released it, but not until 2001. during the waiting, ari and tuomo had already started to compose new songs. in this time ari and tuomo rehearsed about 5 or 6 times a week.
during this period ari and tuomo played only few gigs, actually no one seemed to be interested what they did. but they just rehearsed more than never before.
2nd european tour
in june 2001 the band toured 2nd time europe, this time with finnish punk/hc band valse triste. they toured in poland, germany, czech and played one gig in belgium. mostly at the squats. very funny and not so professional tour.
album
in december 2001 they entered to the janne's new "studio", actually it was his own band's rehearsal room. ari and tuomo gave it a name "fusion reactor". in 4 days they recorded, mixed and mastered their biggest effort. an album named album (name came from jamu). massive 42 tracks entity which demanded a lot of put ari and tuomo to their limits.
they started again to find record deal and just after one month brazilian label bucho discos said yes. and in summer 2002 album was released.
more gigs, more attention
in 2002 they started to gig more in finland. suprisingly their odd style got friends and cause for effect started to get reputation. maybe 2 most important gigs in their career so far was in november 2002 with grindcore classic napalm death. also in 2003 they gigged together with rotten sound, entombed and defleshed.
professional-300
in may 2003 ari and tuomo entered again to janne's place (it had changed a location since album-sessions) to record a side for split cd. in a weekend they recorded 15 new songs. but the split project cancelled and in february 2004 ari and tuomo recorded 3 more songs, also in janne's place which had changed again its location.
this 18 track recording got a name "professional-300". again bucho discos decided to release it and in summer 2004 it came out as mcd.
3rd european tour
in september 2003 ari and tuomo went to europe again. this time with german stoner/doom band gorilla monsoon. it took two weeks around the germany, mostly in the ex-east side. it was a most professional tour so far and the band got really good feedback.
4th european "tour"
in september 2004, they went again to germany, but this time only 3 gigs. the most important were morbid festspiele, a local extreme metal festival which had behemoth as main act.
dies irae records, tuska festival
in autumn 2005, after 3 years of gigging and gaining more and more attention in the internatinal underground scene, finnish record label dies irae records wanted to do a record deal with the band. they released "2001 - 2004" discography cd in 06.06.06. which included all bass|drums records so far. in summer 2006 ari and tuomo played two evenings in legendary metal festival tuska evening club. both evenings were big success.
stay heavy records, 0+1=01, more tuska, finnish metal expo
in the end of 2006 dies irae records became part of stay heavy records, a bigger finnish label. ari and tuomo went to the studio in november to record a new full length album. this time with sammy roiha. in a weekend they recorded 33 new songs and sammy mixed and mastered them. 0+1=01 was released officially in 28.02.2007. it took positive reviews around the world.
in summer 2007 ari and tuomo played again in tuska festival evening club. this time in 3 evenings. those gigs were propably the most successful gigs they have ever played.
in february 2008 ari and tuomo played in finnish metal expo, a big metal exhibition. they played two evenings and together 5 sets.
do it yourself
in 2007 and 2008 ari and tuomo gigged and slowly composed a new material. finally in winter 2009 they decided to continue by themselves and stopped the deal with stay heavy records. since 2008 they have composed new material and new recording will be out in summer 2010.
