Kollaa Will Hold

A Finnish soldier fires his Suomi SMG. Photo by J. Hartikka Kollaa Will Hold is a (very) experimental tactical Play By E-Mail wargame with role-playing elements. Participants direct individual characters who may be ordinary soldiers, squad or platoon leaders in double-blind scenarios moderated by a hopefully unbiased GM. Because casualties are expected to be quite high each player directs up to four characters.

Kollaa Will Hold is set in the Winter War of 1939-1940 and utilizes a hybrid Twilight 2000 1st edition / Phoenix Command system. The scenarios, provided the GM lasts beyond the first one, are linked to each other and form a campaign. Player characters gain experience and retain equipment gained. Likewise, units led by the player characters retain losses in men and materiel suffered to the next scenario unless resupplied.

The game is free with all the usual advantages and disadvantages. The GM attempts to maintain a turnaround time of one week, but no guarantees are given. Due to limited resources not everyone gets to play, though would-be players will be added to a list of candidates. The GM may exclude any players from the game or even drop the whole project at any time without prior announcement or even a good explanation.

Due to the complexity of the systems used the game progresses rather slowly. In a scenario with multiple players this does lead to situations where some players have nothing to do for several weeks or even months real time (a minute or two game time) while the GM and other players are busily fighting a battle elsewhere. This is obviously not a game for those who wish to play something furious and fast-moving but it does provide the possibility to match one's tactical skill and luck with those of others in an unforgiving combat environment.

Scenario 1

Preparations for the first scenario begun in September 1998. Playing it was initially scheduled to begin in November but due to various reasons this was not possible. Game play finally started on January 21, 1999. The scenario was terminated on June 1, 2003 due to time constraints.

Current game situation (as of June 1, 2003):
  • The game is on hiatus until sometime in 2005. Scenario 2 will then be played. If you are interested, send in a Player Application
  • Real Time Elapsed Since Campaign Beginning: Four years and three months.
  • Game Date and Time: November 30, 1939. 0902 hours.
