The Finnish Scenario Series

This is a planned series of very detailed scenarios covering the Finnish War of Independence of 1918 and related conflicts, the two wars fought between Finland and the Soviet Union in 1939-1944 and the Lappland War fought against the Germans. Suitable for use with Phoenix Command and based on sources mostly unavailable for international players of the game, this series will hopefully provide not only entertaining gaming sessions but also insights into the conflicts themselves.
I must stress that while these scenarios are based on historical or fictious accounts of the wars, they are nevertheless essentially only interpretations of what happened. In the source material the authors are mainly concerned in recounting history or telling a story, not documenting the event. Thus numerous details important for scenario designers are almost always missing... it is usually not easily determinable how many soldiers were involved in a given action nor how they were organized. It is also almost impossible to find out what equipment the average soldier had, and even important items such as support weapons are glossed over. The Red Army assault is supported by tanks and artillery and is beaten back by anti-tank guns and machine guns... but most often there are no details on what types or - more importantly - how many were involved. At times equipment can be guessed by conjecture - if the Finn with the LMG is credited with slaying twelve enemies
in a few seconds he is most likely not using the indigenous Lahti/Saloranta LMG which had a 20-round magazine but rather a war-booty DP with a 47-round pan.
But for the most part the scenario designer can only hazard a guess and choose the most likely alternative... or simply one which facilitates the historical outcome of the situation.
