The first marks of human populations in Kiuruvesi come as far as
Stone Age, thousands of years ago. The populations were not regular.
People moved often their camps, looking for better fishing waters and hunting areas.
The first regular inhabitants, mentioned in historical documents,
moved from south in the beginning of the 16th century.
The municipality of Kiuruvesi was established in 1873. The total area is 1427 square kilometres and there are 10500 inhabitantas
living in Kiuruvesi, the half in the centre and the other half in the
countryside. Kiuruvesi recieved the rights of the town in 1993.
The economical life of Kiuruvesi has always been based on the strong
agriculture beeing the biggest milk producer in Finland. Today
Kiuruvesi is well known as a strong developer and supporter of the
green and ecologically safe methods in agriculture. Today Kiuruvesi is
even regarded as the "Capital of the Eco-Finland". A large
number of the local farmers have officially contracted to follow the
"green methods" when producing the raw materials and products.
This means among other things: No chemical fertilizer anymore. There is a
new and modern eco-dairy under construction in Kiuruvesi at the moment.
Many farmers have some secondary business in addition to the normal farm work Hiring out summer cottages, houses and villas is one of the ways to earn
some extra. And why not .... the green Finnish nature with the thousands
of lakes will offer a fascinating touch to the original human life
and lots of foreign tourists have realized that thing.
