Helsinki

The Helsinki Cathedral on a busy summer day.

Helsinki is the largest city in Finland and is the capital. I definitely recommend time in Helsinki, especially during the summer with all the smells of summer and the sea. FETG can offer guiding their for groups and these are some of our recommended sights.

*Suomenlinna Fortress- Located on a group of islands protecting Helsinki for over 250 years is a "pristine" place of natural beauty. The ferry cruise takes 15 minutes and leaves from the harbor area.

*Seurasaari-The whole island of Seurasaari is an open-air museum telephone: 09 4050 9660, dotted with 18th and 19th century houses representing the whole gamut of Finnish life. It was the brainchild of Axel Olai Heikel, who set it up in 1909 to preserve the traditions of Finnish life. The oldest building on the island is the wooden Karuna Church, which was completed in 1686.

Recommendations in Helsinki: Kiasma modern art museum, Finnish National Museum, Finnish Museum of Natural History, Helsinki City Museum, Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square, Uspensky Orthodox Cathedral, half day cruise to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress from market square harbor, *Tempeliaukionkirkko/Rock Church, President's Palace, Market Area, Sibelius Monument, Finlandia Hall (Classical Music), Helsinki University, Parliament, Shopping at Stockman.

*Carved into a small hill of granite, Temppeliaukio Church is one of the biggest success stories in modern architecture in Helsinki. It is a special place that affects the mind as deeply as any meditation. It is like a cavern filled with primeval force, a life-sized space in the cold flow of time.
