architecture / projects / arvaja / sketch / design / construction

A R V A J A

Project description: The Arvaja House was primarily designed by using traditional sketching and modelmaking methods. Extensive use of CAD and virtual design methods were introduced when the Arvaja family lived in Germany and again when the project entered the construction phase. Otherwise, the sketches and master drawings were all made by hand. Architecturally, the project picked up a lot of themes from the realm of icehockey: the ground floor plan resembles iceskates, there's a penalty bench in the foyer, curving sidewalls in the bathroom and a "sidewaypass" in the arrangements of the rooms. They all pay homage to the prior profession of the client.
