Project assignment: The assignment was to design a unique, but moderate-cost house, that could be mostly built by the family themselves. The client wished for a contemporary urban villa with a touch of classical architectural atmosphere. The design had to meet the challenges presented by the program, site conditions, existing urban code and requirements of participation by the new land-use and planning law (2000). The client gave us freedom in architectural expression, ie. curving and zigzagging walls.

Arvaja / concept sketch
A concept sketch showing development of the site plan. Entry to the site is from the north (bottom of the image). The house is on a edge of a small hilltop (left) and the rooms open up towards the ideal direction of the sunshine. From the sketch you can see, how the arrangement of roomspaces is diagonal. The reasons are both functional as well as esthetic: required movement through spaces produce also visually long interior views. This gives the rooms a feeling of continuing space, that seem to make them larger and lighter.

Arvaja / preliminary sketch
A preliminary sketch of the south elevation showing the two stories high, ziggurat-type alternative. The first idea was to continue the small hill on the site into a build mountain - The Arvaja House. This idea was later developed into the combination of a box-like villa with a tilted, curving wing.

Arvaja / inspiration
Architecturally, the project picked up a lot of themes from the realm of icehockey: the ground floor plan resembles iceskates, there's a penalty bench in the foyer, curving sidewalls in the bathroom and a "sidewaypass" in the arrangements of the rooms. They all pay homage to the prior profession of the client.
