Sketching process: Use of freehand sketching, modelmaking and perspective studies.

Villa Mäntylä / freehand sketch
The basic idea of the house can be seen in this freehand sketch. The two-storey-high building is plastered white with emphasis on some specific colour surfaces for extra visual boost. The whole building is more like a intertwined 3D-labyrith, which turns around an intimate courtyard. The access to this central outdoor space is through the living room glasswall or from the appletree orchard. Here the Arabian idea of the garden as Paradise is realised to its full extent.

Villa Mäntylä / site study
The site was studied according to landscape, direction of the sun, functions of the open spaces and neighbours. The approach to the site is via a stone-paved courtyard, which is borded by the main building and the garage. The one-story-high garage and storage building protects from the noise pollution of the main road to the north. The two-story-high main building is exactly in the same place where the excisting old building was and thus frames the roadside. The old appletree orchard has been kept and the sauna with its outdoor spaces is situated to the southside of the lot. The easter edge of the site is planted with trees and bushes to give green views to the neighbours.

Villa Mäntylä / freehand sketch
Another study of the building where the main building is annexed by a sauna and a garage, which continue the borderlines of the site. The overall shape of the building is a broken box with terraced surfaces. With all these architectural elements, including walls and openings, the building protects its inhabitants from the curiosity of the bypassers and thus insures the safety of the home.

Villa Mäntylä / sketch
A true combination of the urban and country living Villa Mäntylä facilitates freetime activities with the courtyard terrace, greenhouse and sauna in the original appletree orchard. The main entry is from the street (1) under a canopy. Kitchen, dining space and living room are an entity (3, 4, 5) which end up in a two-storey-space with large windows. There's an overview of the living area from the kitchen (3) and you can walk to an outdoor patio (21) via a sliding door. From the main living spaces, there's a good access to the terrace and to the greenhouse, which edges off the neighbours to the east. The room (6) on the ground floor is the "zen-room" where one can relax, enjoy the silence and peace of comfortable home.

The bedrooms are placed on the upper floor of the house: masterbedroom (22) and the divideable childrens room (23). There's a great view from the masterbedroom through the glasswall and sliding doors to the balcony and beyond. In the corridor foyer there's the Wall of Fame (26) with all the prizes and medals. To give the interior more spacious delights a opening is placed above the entry (2) and the living area (4). From the upper level (27) there's a view outside and a bridge connection (29) to the upper terrace (30). This upper level can function as a workspace, service area, childrens playground, etc.

Villa Mäntylä / section
Section through the main building: on the left is the entry (hatched vertically) and the two-storey-high hall. Above the entry area is the master bedroom and balcony. In the middle of the house is another two-storey-high living room above which is a workspace. The terrace and sauna are outside the main building on the right.

Villa Mäntylä / elevation study
The main building, its annexes and connecting walls form the western elevation towards the roadside. The entry to the house is on the left, behind a low wall and panels. The courtyard sauna is on the right, behind the high wall which protects the inhabitants from curious bypassers.

Villa Mäntylä / elevation study
The main building, annexes, walls and staircases form the eastern elevation towards the garden. The way to the terrace is via outdoor stairs under which is sited the greenhouse.
