Sketching process: the sketching process combined scientific analysis of the site and context, collaboration techniques with the client and the planning officials of the municipality, simulation of the users needs and wishes as well as traditional architectural tools like freehand sketching, modelmaking and perspective studies. The basic approach was to first take into account the place (natural landscape, ground conditions, ect.), then the users and their dreams and finally the architectural intentions and impact of good housing design.
This project included a preliminary study of the use of the site and proposal of new buildings, which was implemented into a revision of the detail plan of the area.

Ca'Onnela / siteview
View from the site towards Lake Ukkijärvi in the municipality of Kangasala, Finland.

Ca'Onnela / site
Concept for the site in Kangasala. On the left is a sandridge from the last Iceage and on the right a deep freshwater lake. The narrow lot already has an excisting building (olemassa oleva asuinrakennus), which is right on the edge of a main road to the center of the village. The solar cycle (north is towards the top of the image), views to the lake and optimal use of space between buildings as well as the proper housing design criteria presented a very complex planning situation, which was eventually solved through physical modelmaking.

View of the old excisting building (at the back) and new buildings (in front) looking from the Lake Ukkijärvi.

Ca'Onnela / model 1:200
View of the site from north. The excisting old building is on the right with a ne addition build on the upper floor. This loft-apartment has a facade-long terrace with excellent views out to the Lake Ukkijärvi.

Ca'Onnela / model 1:200
View of the site from east. At the back, the sandridge from the last Iceage can be seen. All the buildings have to be carefully placed in relation to the ground topography and each other in order to create safe and accessible outdoor spaces.

Ca'Onnela / model 1:200
View of the site from the road. The new, upgraded facade of the old excisting building and the rooftoprs of the new houses are visible to the bypassers. The roofs are designed to be green, using landscape architecture as the "fifth" facade.
