Vaasa Museum of Labour

  • Vaasa Museum of Labour opened in 1991.
  • In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum arranges special exhibitions on a particular theme twice a year.
  • The main purpose of the museum is to develop it into a diverse information centre for working class traditions. The museum also provides tailormade study visits for schools.
  • The museum's area of operation is that covered by the former Province of Vaasa. Its activities are maintained by the Organisation for Workers Culture in Vaasa. Voluntary work is of central importance to the museum's activities. Museum staff have been funded by job creation schemes.
The Library has about 4800 volumes on social and literary themes. The periodicals collection has twelve runs of newspapers and twenty sets of periodicals from 1910 onwards. In addition there are various individual issues of other newspapers. The library collections are in the process of being stored on computer.
The museum's document collection has twelve collections from organisations and private individuals.

The photograph collection has about 6500 pictures and about 600 glass negatives. The collection is at present being stored in digital form. Both books and archives are accessible to the public in the library.
