The cover problem is by Eero Saarenheimo, who celebrated his 90th birthday
on June 21, 2009. He follows keenly the development of chess composition and
solves helpmates and twomovers. Admirable activity and a living proof of the
positive aspects of chess! See p. 54 for the solution of the cover problem and
the next page for two dedication problems and information on Saarenheimo.
A major part of this issue is devoted to the European Solving Championship (ESC),
It took place in Subotica, Serbia, May 8-9. There were solving competitions,
lectures, composing competitions and other program. The event was a success,
congratulations and thanks to the organisers! The pages 36-47 reveal the results
of solving and composing competitions, problems from various competitions etc.
From the Finnish point of a view, the best successes came from the composing
competitions, see pages 37 and 43.
Another recent event was held in Messigny, France, in the end of May. Finns
participate seldom in this meeting, but this year there was an exception. Antti
Parkkinen, who lives in France and has only recently developed an interest in
chess problems, participated and was very happy that he did. His extensive report
is on pp. 48-54.
Because of geographical reasons, Finns do not participate too often in European
problem chess events. The same reasons may prevent many of us from attending
the Rio congress.
The traditional Paha pähkinä, A Hard Nut To Crack, selected as always
by Neal Turner. This time there is a difficult study from a solving competition
for your enjoyment on p. 54.
The spring meeting of Suomen Tehtäväniekat took place in May. One
weekend filled with problem chess activity of almost any kind was, once again,
a remarkable experience, see pp. 56-57.
The originals columns start from p. 58. This time there is a full range of problems,
from orthodox mates to exotic fairies. We appreciate your contributions and
so do our solvers and readers! In addition to the problems and solutions, the
mistakes from the previous issue are listed on p. 60.
The next ST is due to appear after within a few months. We wish you a nice summer!
