Our cover problem is a three-mover by Harri Hurme, who turned 60 on June 2,
2005. He is well known as a dedicated problemist with successes as a composer
and solver. In addition, he has been very active in problem chess organisations.
Miraculously enough, Harri has been able to pursue also a career in OTB chess,
in which he is a FM. There are six examples of his versatility in composing
on p. 182, with solutions on the following pages. Do not miss the announcement
of Harri Hurme 60 JT, organised in three sections, see p. 184. On the following
page, there are dedication problems for Harri.
Speaking of Harri, his most recent achievement as a solver took place in the
first ECSC. held in Poland in June. The Finnish team, which consisted of Harri
Hurme, Jorma Paavilainen, Pauli Perkonoja and Henry Tanner, succeeded in overtaking
Great Britain at the final stages to win the European Championship. In the individual
competition Pauli Perkonoja, the oldest participant, showed his immense ability
once again with an impressive performance. The report of the competition is
on pp. 172-176.
In the Jan Hannelius 85 JT, see pp. 177-181, the only successful Finnish composer
was Terho Marlo, previously known as Jaatinen. On p. 181 there is the announcement
of Jan Hannelius MT for problems showing the Hannelius theme. Please reprint
the announcement!
Kari Valtonen's article series continues with a second part investigating the
key moves. Even though you may not understand a word of Finnish, the problems
and solutions on pp. 186-192 should speak for themselves.
Richard P. Stanley has kindly sent us an article on queue problems, which have
been researched also by Finnish problemists interested in mathematical chess
problems. Food for thought on pp. 193-203!
The award of the ST Summer Tourney 2004 is on pp. 204-205. The judge Dolf Wissmann
gave the 1st Prize to a helpmate showing effective use of a diagonal.
Our originals section covers the pages 206-214. Please note that starting with
the next issue, Mikael Grönroos will be in charge of the direct mates, and hopefully
bring this column to new heights! Mikael continues to edit also the helpmates
column as long as a suitable replacement is found.
Marko Ylijoki presents a selection of six interesting serieshelpmates on p.
215, and initiates us in the possibilities of showing Finnish Novotny in fairy
problems on pp. 216-217.
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of ST, a celebration party was held in the
middle of May in Helsinki. The main attraction was an evening party with dinner,
festive speeches, lectures, recognitions and free program. Prior to the party,
there was an entertaining solving competition with problems all published in
1935, organised by Neal Turner. See pp. 219-221.
The Four Corner Project by Henry Tanner continues on pp. 222-230, as does the
reconstruction column by Harri Hurme on p. 230. On the next page there are six
dedication problems by Jorma Pitkänen.
The next ST is due to appear in late autumn.
